Who is eligible for counseling services at Oasis?

Women of all ages and male children up to the age of 12, subject to the following criteria:

 

How do I make an appointment?

Call Oasis at 205-933-0338 and request an appointment with an Oasis Counselor. You will be directed to an intake counselor who will ask you a series of questions to determine if Oasis is right for you and to determine the fee you will be charged for receiving services at Oasis.

 

How much will it cost me if I come in for an appointment?

Fees for services are based on household income. Fees generally start at $15.00 for a one-hour individual counseling session. The maximum fee charged is $75.00 for a one-hour individual counseling session.Fees are based on household income on a sliding fee scale.

What if I am not sure if I am eligible for services?

Call Oasis at 205.933.0338 and ask to speak to an intake counselor who can determine your eligibility for services. If Oasis does not provide the services you need, we will help you identify other potential community resources.

What if I just want to attend an education workshop. Do I have to talk to an intake counselor?

No.

What is the cost for attending a group or workshop at Oasis?

Fees to attend groups and workshops vary but are generally based on household income.

Do you offer services for Spanish-speaking women and children?

Yes, on a limited basis.

You deserve to take time out for yourself and the time with your counselor is just that -- focused time just for you. Talking with a counselor can help you feel more in control of your life so you can do the things you want to do.

The staff of women at Oasis are there to listen and offer support when you need it most. You might want help for dealing better with stress, getting over the blues, having better relationships with your kids, parents, or partner, dealing with the loss of a loved one, adjusting to a new baby or feeling better about yourself.

Our office on the Southside of Birmingham provides a safe, relaxed space for sorting through your feelings.

Counseling Myths

Myth: Counseling is something only "crazy" people need.

Reality: Counseling is for anyone who is going through a tough time and wants to feel better. When you are stressed or overwhelmed and it's hard to get through the day, talking to someone can help.

Myth: Getting counseling means I am weak. I should be able to handle it all by myself.

Reality: You can only do so much! Making the choice to take back control of how you feel by reaching out for help takes courage and strength.

Myth: A stranger can't understand me or my problems.

Reality: counselors are trained to help people deal with tough issues. Your counselor will listen to your concerns without judgment, and guide you through your problems to find workable and healthy strategies and solutions.

Myth: Counseling doesn't fit with my religious or spiritual beliefs.

Reality: Counseling isn't something that takes the place of prayer, talking with your minister, or any other religious or spiritual comforts. It just provides another level of support. Your counselor will respect your beliefs and will talk to you about how to use these strengths to help you meet your goals.

Myth: If I talk to a stranger, everyone will know my personal problems:

Reality: Everything you tell your counselor is private and confidential. You can share with her anything that is on your mind and know that she is there to listen and support you, without judgment. Family members and friends won't ever know what you talk about unless you tell them.
