Oasis, a Women’s Counseling Center, was founded in 1995 by Anne Bruno LaRussa as an outgrowth of her graduate work in counseling at UAB. Based on her needs assessment of underserved women in the Birmingham area, Anne’s vision was to provide mental health services and educational programs at fees that every woman could afford. With the support of a diverse group of women in the community, the Oasis Women’s Counseling Center and Education Center opened its doors on 14th Avenue and 19th Street on Birmingham’s Southside, utilizing two beautiful historic neighboring houses.
